Nasal showers can indeed bring relief when symptoms occur, but only if you rinse with the correct solution. Every nasal rinsing requires a certain amount of salt, because the solution used to rinse the nose should be isotonic, i.e. contain 0.9% salt. This proportion corresponds to the salt content in the human body, for example in tear fluid or blood plasma. The salt in the solution also has an anti-inflammatory effect. Even if the salt content in the rinsing water is relatively low, it prevents the mucous membranes from swelling.
Which is the right salt for a good nasal rinse?
With nasal rinsing salt, the concentration and composition of the salt contained plays an important role. There are three types of rinsing solutions: hypotonic, hypertonic and isotonic. The effect depends on the concentration.
Hypotonic saline solutions: A hypotonic rinsing solution has a lower proportion of osmotically active particles than the mucosal cells. Result: Water penetrates the nasal mucosa and causes it to swell.
Hypertonic saline solutions: The hypertonic rinsing solution has more osmotically active particles than body fluid, which stimulates the cells to release fluid. Result: The cells of the nasal mucous membrane can dry out.
Isotonic salt solutions: The ideal concentration for a rinsing solution: The mineral content of the mucosal cells and the nasal rinsing solution are in balance in an isotonic rinsing solution
Keep mucous membranes moist
The overview of the individual solutions shows what is good for the nasal mucosa. A well-tended nasal mucous membrane is more resistant to viruses and germs.
