‘’Just put it in the microwave!’’ That’s right, we all do it. And if the value limits are not crossed, microwaves are actually harmless. If! Because microwave devices with defective shielding can have leakage radiation that is harmful to health. Likewise, various microwave devices, such as WLAN routers, mobile phones or transmission masts, can become sources of interference if they are not positioned properly in- or outside the house. These harmful or interfering microwave radiation can be detected using the compact new BR16 radiation meter from Trotec.
The BR16 hand-held meter reliably detects sources of interference and leakage radiation. In addition, you can easily check the manufacturer’s specifications on the maximum power density of devices using microwave radiation. After all, equipment with microwave radiation quickly accumulates in the household and in the office: from older or leaking microwave devices in the kitchen, radio transmitters, remote control and Bluetooth devices in the living rooms, to wireless video transmission systems, WLAN routers and WLAN amplifiers in work spaces. Microwave radiation from transmitter masts and some cellular networks can also be added to this list. Even in cars, extras such as heated seats and hands-free Bluetooth systems generate high-frequency radiation.
Here’s how it works
With the BR16 radiation meter, it is just as easy to detect sources of excessive radiation as it is to detect sources of interference that cause technical problems in the home or at the workplace. The measuring range covers 0 to 9.99 mW/cm² (frequency: 2.45 GHz). If the measured value is above the ICNIRP maximum limit of 5 mW/cm² , the BR16 radiation meter automatically warns the user through a combination of beeps and red flashing LED lights below the display. And best of all: The entire device is operated in a user-friendly way using just three buttons.
Other features of the BR16 also guarantee convenient device operation: Display of the value measured and the selected measuring unit are shown on the large and easy-to-read LCD monochrome display, including the optional switchable background lighting. With the maximum value function, which can be activated if necessary, the largest measured radiation value to date is displayed instead of the current measured value. In this way, increasing radiation emissions can be detected early on in a series of measurements. The radiation meter has automatic calibration to ensure that the measurement results are always accurate. And when it is not in use, the hand-held meter switches off after approx. 15 minutes.
Incidentally, the BR16 can be attached to a tripod that is available as an option with its 1/4’’ thread on the back. This allows the microwave radiation meter to be set up exactly where it is needed, for example to carry out long-term measurements.
Four of the many advantages I particularly like:
- the fast and easy microwave radiation measurement in the 2.45 GHz band
- the measuring range of 0 to 9.99 mW/cm²
- the maximum value and hold function
- the visual and acoustic alarms when limit values are exceeded
