The Comeback Of Genuine Wooden Furniture

Wooden Dining-Room TableIf you start thinking way back you can certainly remember the old, dark and bulky wooden furniture which dominated lots of the living rooms of the generation of our grandparents or even parents. Usually they were used to accommodate the exclusive china set, the crystal glasses or the sterling cutlery. Unfortunately, these pieces of furniture often turned the living-room into a dark and rather unwelcoming place and the younger generation just thought they were hideous!

Especially after the second world war, during the time of the economic boom such heavy wooden furniture was very popular. It satisfied the need for security, tradition and coziness. Besides, it was a way to express the pride of having overcome the time of austerity after the war. Nevertheless, roughly since the 1990s, there emerged a counterculture which supported interior trends determined by a lot of glass, chrome and straight-lined design. Furniture made of natural materials like wood, cork or felt were labeled as old-fashioned and unhip.

However, during the last couple of years a new movement has started which implies more naturalness and comfort concerning furniture and interior trends. This new interior concept was also presented at the international furnishing show, IMM Cologne, which took place in January 2011. Due to the climate change people tend to once again set a high value on the use of ecological materials that are not treated with toxic paint or other surface coatings. The new interior trends 2011 have melodic names like “Emotional Austerity” or “Re-Balancing” and they all focus on sustainable and natural materials, modern design and state-of-the-art technology.

Long gone are the times in which you would be embarrassed to own those pieces of wooden furniture and you felt the need to hide them! Read More

How to Create the Right Climate for Your Prized Orchids

Orchids are among the most popular and widespread flowering plants in the world. Their often tall, slender stalks, their exotic and extravagant form and their delicate petals and magnificent colours inspire and fascinate orchid lovers and growers around the world and fill the hearts of those who share their passion and pleasure with wonder and awe.

Orchids are most commonly found in the tropics of South and Central America and also in Asia. For the Aztecs they were holy, which is why they grew them in their splendid antique gardens, and for Confucius, the wise Chinese thinker and philosopher, they embodied grace, purity, beauty and elegance.

close-up shot of pink orchidBut there are several hardened species which can flourish as far north as the Arctic Circle and as far south as Antarctica. Of the 30,000 or so different species of orchid known to man there is a small number which are deemed especially collectable. Rothschild’s Slipper, an orchid that takes as long as 15 years to grow, can fetch prices upwards of 5000 US dollars per stem.

Most hobby gardeners would not be willing to pay such a considerable price for a single example, but they are prepared to invest quite substantial sums in order to be able to nurture their passion. Read More

A passion for shoes

A dehumidifier of the TTK S series in a wardrobe
Ballerinas, sneakers, boots, sandals, peeptoes, stilettos – the women among our readers will know the problem: whether they are intended to be comfortable, practical or quite simply stunningly beautiful, if there’s one thing you can never have enough of it’s got to be shoes!  Yet once you’ve bought them, there never seems to be enough closet space to accommodate the whole collection. Maybe that’s because in the course of a life-time the average woman will accumulate around 200 pairs of shoes – and that’s only a rough estimate!

And of course these little treasures will want to be stowed away properly …

First of all, it is important to not just pile up all your shoes into an enormous heap or simply chuck them into a huge cardboard box. This is not only a rather confusing and messy way to store your shoes, it also inevitably leads to ugly marks and bumps, especially with the most sensitive models. Wooden shoe stretchers are a great help when it comes to preserving the original form of your favourite shoes as long as possible, especially if they have been neglected over a longer period.

But can you just put your shoes in the wardrobe? Doesn’t that – well – smell?

The biggest problem concerning the storage of shoes is that no matter how often you wash your feet or how much foot deodorant you use, you can’t stop certain smells from evolving. But who would want such a smell to spread to their freshly washed laundry? The reason for the typical, slightly musty smell of shoes is mostly moisture, and if they are not dried sufficiently, they can quickly take on a rather unpleasant smell. If you have been wearing your shoes all day, you should therefore make sure that you air them well afterwards. And if they are soaked from the rain, you should dry them thoroughly for at least 48 hours before putting them back into the closet. High levels of humidity can easily lead to unpleasant smells developing  in your wardrobe – smells which linger in clothes and which are extremely hard to get rid of, even when you bring on the big guns like lashings of perfume and room scent to cover them up or drown them out.

One of the best and most efficient ways of combating excess humidity in small rooms or walk-in closets is to install a dehumidifier. A basic model, like the TTK 30 S for example, is most well-equipped to do the job. These ultra-compact appliances are not only really economical, they are also particularly well suited for continuous operation in small and heated rooms.

And as soon as you’ve got the problem of high humidity under control, then there is nothing to stop you from having a nicely orderly closet… because is there anything that could possibly be more delightful than having all of your favourite items of clothing lined up beautifully in one place? Apart from yet another pair of shoes, maybe …

Happy Birthday, Trotec24!

Happy Birthday - Trotec24 turns 3

Yesterday was a very special day here at the Trotec Headquarters: The Trotec24 Online Shop turned 3! We took that as an opportunity to celebrate our shop – an ambitious project that was launched January 25, 2008.

When the decision to start selling our products online was made, there were many sceptics. People doubted that in our field of business, with the majority of our customers being business clients, online was really the way to go. And although the Trotec Group offers a broad range of highly specialized, individual product and service solutions which traditionally require a considerable amount of service and consulting, we have ventured that step.

Because we have always believed that we can add even more to the service you experience when purchasing our goods.

Fed up with your old folding rule? So are we! Win a new laser distance meter today!

Man in a bowler hat carrying a folding rule in a binWelcome to the 21st century! You only have to look back in history – and not very far back at that –  to see that there comes a time when many objects and products which we have grown accustomed or even attached to have had to make way for new inventions which were not only far more convenient, easier to use and much more useful  – they simply knocked their predecessors into a cocked hat!

The way things are going it could well be that the good old folding or carpenter’s rule – that tried and trusted piece of measuring equipment – is about to experience that same fate. It may be tough on the folding rule, but how bad is that compared to the benefits its successor can bring to mankind?

There probably isn’t a soul amongst us – well in my age group at least – who doesn’t fondly remember their very first portable audio tape player. We loved them. Even before they introduced the buffering technology that stopped us from initially being able to take them with us on a hike or run. But did that stop us from buying those smart little MP3 players when they first hit the shops? No, it didn’t. And what about rotary-dial phones, video 8 cameras, typewriters, long playing vinyl records and video cassettes. They were all hallmarks of a new era of sophisticated, upbeat technology in their day. And they were all condemned to one day being replaced by something more contemporary, something more stylish, something quite simply better.

Time then to introduce the BD15, the new laser distance meter from Trotec. The BD15  is an extremely accurate and extremely easy-to-use measuring device that in years to come will be seen as the logical transition from the old-fashioned and outdated folding rule. The lightweight, pocket-sized BD15 does not only look an impressive piece of professional equipment – a point that could rank high on the list of certain crafts and tradesmen like builders, kitchen fitters, interior decorators and carpet layers who are all always keen to show their customers that they clearly have the situation well in hand – it is an impressive piece of professional equipment: there’s the modern-day laser which can measure distances unerringly in a fraction of the time and up to a fraction of an inch, a Pythagoras function with which you can even carry out indirect measurements, a backlit display, ergonomically-arranged soft-touch keys and a robust dust and splashproof housing which means you can even take it along with you and use it on building sites or anywhere else in the Great Outdoors.

Want one? Win one! Enter our competition and post your funniest, your most imaginative, your most surprising photo of you (or somebody else) and your (or their) old folding rule. Just go to www.facebook.com/trotec4u to see how it’s done.

Course if you don’t win, you could always buy one…

Time to say goodbye to a heating myth or two – and save £££s on your next energy bill !

Finding the best way to heat your house has become somewhat of a science nowadays – of course you want it to be nice and warm, but isn’t that easier said than done when you consider how prices for natural gas and heating oil have gone through the roof in recent months? And what about the moisture content of the air? If the relative humidity is too high then there’s a real risk of mould forming – mould that can seriously affect your health and damage your possessions. Too low and you can quickly end up with dry, itchy skin, chapped lips and a sore throat and a barking cough to go with it.

What many people do not realise, however, is that you can actually save yourself a tidy sum and more importantly perhaps protect yourself, your family and your property if you are prepared to say goodbye to one or two popular myths which are commonly associated with heating and ventilation: Read More

Come Rain or Shine: Work Tents from Trotec

There’s nothing like a good office job. That is at least the view that, understandably one would imagine, many office workers seem to share. On balance an office job has a lot going for it: when it’s hot and sticky outside you can turn up the air conditioning or switch on a dehumidifier and create an indoor climate that you feel most comfortable in. And when it’s cold and wet and miserable outside you can comfortably turn up the heating a notch or two and watch how those less fortunate than yourself, like the postman, the builder, the roofer, go about their daily business while you stand gazing out of the window absent-mindedly stirring a chocolate-coated biscuit in your cup of tea.

But the Great Outdoors also has a lot to offer – and there are those weather-beaten, hardened, rugged-looking types, like fishermen, stallholders, farmers and gardeners, who wouldn’t want to swap a day of their lives for a day in the office with you – not for all the tea in China.

Of course just because you are an office worker that doesn’t mean that you have to enjoy working in an office all day long. And just because you are a fitter, a pipelayer or a service technician that doesn’t mean that you don’t mind having to brave the weather day in, day out and that you don’t sometimes get fed up with the sun beating down on relentlessly on your arched aching back, or standing in a pool of cold, murky water in a trench in the rain, or being buffeted about by gusts and galeforce winds while all you are actually trying to do is  your job.

This then is why we at TROTEC have a produced a fine selection of multi-purpose work tents designed to provide adequate shelter and a proper working environment for those professionals who spend much of their time working outside at the mercy of the elements. The water repellent specially-coated canvas material offers ideal protection against cloudbursts, downpours, light showers even heavy, persistent rain. And because the translucent material allows sunlight to pass through the outer walls of the tent, the light inside the tent is bright enough and natural enough to allow work which requires good lighting conditions, like electrical rewiring jobs, soldering or welding, or repairs on segments of pipes or cables to be carried out.

Putting up the tent is the least of your problems. The lightweight quick assembly tents are up in a jiffy. In fact it only takes one man a matter of seconds to unpack one of our many pop-up models from the practical carry bag included in the scope of delivery, spread it out on the ground in front of him and then step into the tent and then out again while pulling the robust but supple fibreglass rods apart that form the frame of this extremely practical and equally valuable man-made shelter. And just in case you had your doubts – the tent can be stowed away just as quickly when your job is done or you have finished for the day.

It pays to think ahead. The highly-flexible but low-priced, long life work tents from Trotec can prevent you from having to down tools and stop work while you wait for the weather to clear up or the rain to cease. This of course can lead to more productive workdays, especially when deadlines are involved, and much more profitable margins.

So be sure to be well-equipped and ready to respond when the next snowstorm, rain shower or low pressure system comes your way.

Swine flu: the new pandemic or the old hysteria?

In 2009 the world was caught in the grip of a virus which seemed to spread like wildfire and reach pandemic proportions leaving many members of the public shaken, feeling insecure and fearing that worse was still to come. Swine influenza, or swine or pig flu as it is commonly called, is caused by one of several strains of a virus that is endemic (widespread) in pigs. As if this were not bad enough some strains can mutate into a form that can be passed on to humans. The first to catch the virus are normally people who work with pigs and poultry and whose job invariably brings high levels of exposure to such a strain of virus.

In August 2010, the World Health Organisation issued a declaration stating that the swine flu pandemic was officially over.

And now it appears to be back.

Already a number of deaths have occurred which can be directly linked to H1N1, the swine flu virus. According to the NHS the at-risk groups who should be seeking to get their flu shots are pregnant women, people over 65 and people with certain chronic illnesses like heart or kidney disease.

So just how bad is the situation for each and every one of us individually and what can be done to stop the swine flu and the resulting mass hysteria from spreading?

male nurse giving a piggy-bank a flu shot

The experts, and the public, are split on this. There are obviously still a number of factors which have to be taken into account before anyone can safely say why some of the people who caught the flu reacted differently to the virus and why it led to some peoples’ deaths. Has the virus become more aggressive or is it because those affected were genetically disposed to such a hefty or even lethal reaction? Proponents of swine flu vaccinations warn that this is the only real way to stop the virus from spreading and once again reach such magnitudinal proportions.

Yet there is still a large enough number of people who do not accept that swine flu was even a pandemic in the first place and who say that it was misguided governments, a profit-driven pharmaceutical industry and the sensation-seeking television media and press that practiced large-scale scaremongering that nurtured the doubts and fears in the public which led to what many describe as mass lemming-like hysteria.

So who’s right? Well, it would appear that the public at large does not seem to be overly worried about catching the virus and is not seeking to follow the government’s advice or the guidelines given out by many health experts. The vaccine which was stockpiled in 2009 is still sitting in the warehouses to where it was hastily dispatched and although there are doctors and medical experts who readily claim that a flu shot will provide 100% immunization against the H1N1 virus this year, the reaction from members of the public has been sluggish and reluctant.

If you should decide that you wish to have your shot, then you should see that you have it done soon. According to experts, the flu epidemic is expected to peak in January and February and the vaccine will take about two weeks to work.

And should you decide against having a shot and suddenly develop a high temperature, start to shiver uncontrollably, break out in a strong sweat and have a bad headache and throatache coupled with aching limbs, then you should quickly seek medical advice as the chances are that you have caught the flu or even a virus.

Perhaps we will be lucky. Perhaps things won’t turn out as as bad as many predict and perhaps it is time for each and every one of us has to take his or her own health and that of their families into their own hands and decide along with those who they consider to be competent medical experts and experts in other fields what is right for them and what they should do to stay healthy and protect themselves against a possible large-scale outbreak of flu.

But no matter who you are and which line of thinking you choose to follow. The BodyPlus infrared thermometer can help you to measure body temperature quickly and reliably – and contact and trouble-free too! Just hold the infrared device 5 -15 cms from the person’s forehead and press the trigger-like button to obtain an immediate reading. This quick and hygienic method makes the BodyPlus ideal for measuring the temperature of babies and small children as well as all the other members of your family, patients in your surgery… And because you can save up to 32 individual readings, you can quickly see how the temperature has developed.

Hell and High Water Down Under

fighting the flooding with trotec dehumidifiers and building dryers

Every year bookmakers up and down the country have a field day with people eager to put their money on the odds of us having a White Christmas. But last year was different. Instead of looking forward to soft, thick snowflakes floating down lazily from the sky most of us were looking forward to one thing only. Less snow.

Last year we were treated to more than our fair share of the heavenly white stuff. But now that the subzero temperatures which turned the snow to ice and the roads to skating rinks have risen the big thaw has started to set in. And as if to make matters worse persistent rain has swollen the rivers and led to unusually high water levels for this time of the year. And that means a high risk of flooding.

We at the Trotec Group have been in the business long enough to know exactly just how bad the consequences of flooding can be. The impact of knowing that your cellar or even the ground floor of your house is submerged or partly under water can hit a man hard and drive him and his family to despair. That’s why we as a company with a professional water damage restoration division are glad that we are able to bring order to the chaos and help out with powerful building dryers and reliable dehumidifiers.

But imagine what it would be like if the situation were even worse?

And in Queensland, Australia it is. What the people of the northeast state are experiencing at the moment is devastating and defies all imagination. Heavy rainfall and high water have led to large-scale flooding, the worst in 50 years, which is currently affecting the lives of over 200,000 people. The area, which is staggeringly the size of both France and Germany put together, has been partly evacuated to save the residents from further calamity and even more dangers. Dangers in the form of a shortage of clean water, flood-related diseases and poisonous water snakes and hungry crocodiles. Already three people have been killed by snakes bites and countless others attacked by marauding reptiles, which like the displaced human population and countless poor animals, are often on the lookout for higher ground where they are, for the time being at least, safe from the floods. As a result the Australian authorities have issued warnings to the marooned victims not to enter the water – which because of the battle that help organizations and rescue services are having reaching them is almost impossible.

Go here to see an interactive map and an image gallery of the flooding in Queensland

Luckily for us the situation in our part of the world is less dramatic. But for those unfortunate souls who are, or soon will be, affected help is at hand. We have the know-how, the experience and the equipment to provide them with everything they need to dry out their buildings and restore their cellars and houses to their previous state. We may not know all that much about Australian wildlife, but we do know a lot about building dryers and water damage restoration.
