As we know currently, the coronavirus is mainly transmitted via room air and only to a small extent via droplets released during speech or direct contact. What is known as aerosols, a mixture of gas (usually air) and solid or liquid components which, in infected persons, contain viruses, are the cause of the airborne risk of infection in closed rooms. These tiny suspended particles are released into the room during breathing and talking. While larger droplets fall to the floor after approx. 1.5 metres due to their weight (hence the social distancing rule of 1.5 m), infectious aerosol particles can remain suspended due to their small size (approx. 0.3-0.4 µm) for several hours in the air, where they are circulated around the room by the ventilation system – and breathed in!
