As a hairdresser, you have probably jumped back and forth between reception and waiting area, sink and chair in the last few days. Even if you’ve almost always managed to comply with the strict hygiene rules in the process, as a responsible operator you should keep an eye on the particular danger constituted by corona virus: In your salon, too, there is another particularly high risk of infection lurking beyond the familiar droplet infection – the so-called ‘aerosol’. Professor Dr. Roland Netz from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Berlin has the explanation for this phenomenon – and also for the solution…
When we breathe, speak or cough, we not only expel large, visible droplets into the room in a kind of “mist”, but also – and to a much greater extent – tiny aerosols. This fine, virus-containing mist of droplets forms during normal breathing and speaking and floats in the air as a highly infectious cloud for a particularly long time. While the large droplets sink to the ground after only about 1.5 meters due to their weight – which informs the social distancing rule of 1.5 meters – infectious aerosols measuring only a thousandth of a millimetre actually remain in the air “for several hours”, explains a virologist. For him, this insidious aerosol infection is the second major transmission pathway for the corona virus after the well-known means of droplet infection. Smear infection comes in at a distant third.
The renowned bio-physicist Roland Netz is quite aware of the reason for this, given his intensive research into the lifespan of these tiny, infectious, suspended particles, which people exhale. According to his findings, the water content in these small and smallest of droplets evaporates, leaving them smaller still and thus allowing them to float in the air for much longer. Professor Netz therefore recommends a solution that is as logical as it is simple – he advises professional air humidification. This is because the droplets cannot shrink as quickly and, as heavy droplets, tend to sink to the ground – thus quasi achieving the transformation of aerosol infection into the more ‘harmless’ droplet infection.

Aerosol infections are therefore much more insidious – namely via invisible infectious particles that remain in the air for a long time and may be inhaled hours later. According to the findings of Berlin physicist Roland Netz, this can be attributed to excessively dry indoor air in which the water content of the particles evaporates, thus leaving them to float in the air smaller and for even longer. As such, Netz’s claim with regard to closed rooms is: “Relative humidity is important. This should not be too low, because then the drops cannot shrink so quickly. Furthermore, heavier drops tend to sink to the ground – in other words, increased humidity renders viruses harmless more quickly, reducing the risk of infection.
And Professor Netz has another good argument in favour of professional air humidification: “As well as this, the mucous membranes dry out and become more susceptible to viruses. The knowledge we have gained from scientific studies is also useful here: maintaining a relative indoor humidity of 40 to 60% helps to limit the spread and survivability of Coronavirus within buildings.
Professional air humidification reduces the risk of infection and contagion
Medical specialists have long been emphasising that we can reduce the risk of infection by increasing the humidity in buildings. Using humidification to increase the humidity to around 50 % reduces the risk of transmission – and this is precisely why humidifiers and air coolers are so important at this point.
