With the corona virus, handshakes, snuggles and stolen kisses are all out the window. Studies show that the highest transport speed and thus the lowest risk of infection is achieved at over 45 % relative humidity. If the air humidity drops, the sol layer is deprived of the water necessary for its smooth ‘operation’. Its volume decreases, the cilia are increasingly depressed and finally come to a motionless standstill. Of course, this also means that pathogens are no longer removed. The viruses now have a clear path and can penetrate the mucosal cells more easily and cause infections.
