Bit by bit, schools are now returning to their normal timetables. As a responsible headteacher, you should, in addition to implementing the strict hygiene regulations, also keep in mind a particular danger posed by the coronavirus, which has been confirmed by recent scientific studies: In addition to the already well-known droplet infection, another particularly potent infection risk lurks in classrooms – ‘aerosols’. Professor Dr. Roland Netz from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Berlin has provided the explanation for this phenomenon – and also for the solution …
When we breathe, speak or cough, we not only emit large, visible droplets into the room in a kind of “drizzle”, but also, and to a much greater extent, tiny aerosols. This fine, virus-containing mist of droplets is created during normal breathing and speaking, and floats in the air as a highly infectious cloud for a particularly long time. While the large droplets sink to the ground after only about 1.5 metres due to their weight – which gives rise to the social distancing rule of 1.5 metres – infectious aerosols measuring only a thousandth of a millimetre actually remain in the air “for several hours”.
The renowned biophysicist Netz, who conducts intensive research into the lifespan of these exhaled tiny infectious suspended particles, knows why this is so. According to his findings, the water content in these finest of droplets evaporates, making them even smaller and allowing them to float in the air for much longer. Professor Netz therefore recommends a solution that is as logical as it is simple – he advises professional air humidification. This is because the droplets cannot shrink as quickly and, as heavy droplets, tend to sink to the ground – in other words, the aerosol infection is transformed into the ‘more harmless’ droplet infection.
As a responsible headteacher, use professional humidifiers
Aerosol infections therefore work much more insidiously – namely via invisible infectious particles that float in the air for a long time and may take hours to inhale. The Berlin physicist Roland Netz discovered that if the air in a room is too dry, the water content of the particles evaporates, so they become smaller and can float around in the air for even longer. With respect to closed rooms, he has this to say: “What matters is the relative humidity.” This should not be too low, because then the drops cannot shrink so quickly. And in addition, heavier drops tend to sink to the ground – which means that increased moisture makes viruses harmless faster and reduces the risk of infection.
And Professor Netz has another good argument for professional air humidification: Air that is too dry “can dry out your mucous membranes and make you more susceptible to viruses.” The knowledge we have gained from scientific studies also helps here: namely, the fact that maintaining a relative humidity of 40 to 60 % contributes to limiting the spread and survivability of the coronavirus inside buildings.
