Heating solutions for commercial use: Direct infrared oil heaters

This guide series is all about the fast, uncomplicated heating of construction sites and workshops, of storage rooms and cattle sheds. If you want to get to know the truly sensible solutions of the different heating systems such as direct oil fan heaters, chimney oil fan heaters, electric heaters or gas heaters for daily professional use, then you are spot on here. Because in order for you to find the exact heating solution for your specific purpose, we will introduce you here to all the relevant features of these heaters.

Today’s subject is the direct infrared oil heater. Because these devices provide fast, precisely directed heat at construction sites, in storage areas or workshop halls, but generally do not have a fan, they also do not stir up any dust when heating. This is one reason why they are becoming increasingly popular, especially for commercial use in sensitive areas. How does this heater work? Where can it be used best? Which purpose is it not suited for?

Direct infrared oil heaters – how they work

Infrared oil heaters possess a large-surface ceramic plate, which is heated up considerably from the inside by a flame in the combustion chamber. The hot plate then gives the heat off to the outside in the form of infrared radiation. This infrared radiation does not heat the air in the room but the objects it strikes. Especially in draughty areas, in which the hot air of oil-fired heaters was simply blown away, infrared radiation proves to be an effective heating alternative – comparable to the natural warming solar radiation principle.

This is how direct infrared oil heaters are ideally used

Since the entire heat output is released one-to-one into the room, the efficiency of infrared oil heaters is 100%. As providers of fast, precisely directed heat, they are suitable for use in well-ventilated indoor spaces and covered outdoor areas.

What direct infrared oil heaters are not suited for

Infrared oil heaters also give off combustion exhaust gases into the room. They are therefore unsuitable for closed rooms with people or animals inside. Likewise, they cannot be used for construction drying, since combustion produces approx. 1.6 kg of water vapour per litre of fuel – this would result in counter-productive ‘forced humidification’ for the drying process.

Good to know: Direct infrared oil heaters …

  • heat up objects but not the air with their infrared radiation
  • Work without a fan and thus do not stir up any dust, for example
  • are suitable for use in well-ventilated indoor spaces and covered outdoor areas
  • generate 100% heat output
  • together with the heating air, give off combustion exhaust gases directly into the room
  • are unsuitable for closed rooms with people or animals inside
  • cannot be used for construction drying, since approx. 1.6 kg of water vapour per litre of fuel is produced during combustion
  • must not be used in rooms where there is a fire hazard due to the storage of flammable substances
