Mobile heaters ensure more pleasant temperatures in the winter in building shells and workshops, in warehouses or in cattle sheds. This way, even professionals can get the job done quickly. But depending on the set-up site, very different requirements are placed on heaters: when is a direct oil heater fan or chimney oil heater fan required, when an electric heater or gas heater? Read about which heating system is ideally suited for which intended purpose in this Trotec guide series.
Heating systems such as direct oil heating fans, chimney oil heating fans, electric heaters or gas heaters possess specific characteristics due to their construction. In order for you to find the exact heating solution for your specific purpose, we will introduce you to all the relevant features of these heaters in this guide series. What’s more, you will learn under which circumstances you can set up a heater outside your home and how can calculate the actual heat output required based on room size. We begin with the direct oil heater, which promises a heat output of 100%. How does this heater work? Where can it be used best? Which purpose is it not suited for?
Direct oil heater – how it works
In a directly heated oil heater, the fan also supplies the combustion air and then blows out the heated air. To do this, fuel is first atomised, ignited and burnt in the combustion chamber. At the same time, cold air is sucked inside the oil heater by the fan. The air is routed both through the combustion chamber and outside as well and heats up considerably as a result. The hot combustion exhaust gases are then mixed again with the fan’s main air flow. Besides the hot air, the combustion exhaust gases are blown out of the oil heater as well in this procedure.
How direct oil heaters are ideally used
Since the entire heat output is released one-to-one into the room, the efficiency of direct oil heaters is 100%. Ideally, these are therefore used to heat well-ventilated halls, stables or covered outdoor areas quickly and effectively.
What direct oil heaters are not suited for
Because oil heaters not only give off heat but combustion exhaust gases as well they are unsuitable for closed rooms without good ventilation – particularly when people or animals are in the room. Because an additional 1.6 kg of water vapour per litre of fuel is also released during the combustion process, direct heaters should never be used for construction drying – the building would then be permanently ‘forced humidified’.
Good to know: Direct oil heaters…
- are suitable for use in well-ventilated indoor spaces and covered outdoor areas
- generate 100% heat output
- together with the heating air, give off combustion exhaust gases directly into the room
- are unsuitable for closed rooms with people or animals inside
- cannot be used for construction drying, since approx. 1.6 kg of water vapour per litre of fuel is produced during combustion
- must not be used in rooms where there is a fire hazard due to the storage of flammable substances
