Many lives could be saved each year by reducing infection with the flu virus or with the new corona virus, SARS-CoV-2. For example, hospitals, public utilities and even the facilities management of large office blocks could maintain a room air humidity in the scientifically recommended range of 40 to 60%. In modern building complexes, you can usually not even open the windows to let fresh and therefore humid air in.
All medical scientists who work as virologists on the topic of air humidity and all air conditioning experts know that maintaining a relative humidity of 40 to 60% helps to limit the spread and survivability of SARS-CoV-2 inside buildings. With a humidity of up to 23 percent, approximately three quarters of virus particles expelled through coughing are still contagious after an hour. But with 43 percent humidity, for example, the proportion of infectious particles decreases to only about a fifth, because they become heavier due to the absorbed water content and fall to the floor. The drier the air, the more comfortable the viruses feel. And vice versa!
Desirable – a general relative room humidity of 40 to 60%
Theoretically possible: The proportion of outside air that carries moisture into buildings could be increased by installing more ventilation flaps on ventilation systems. Alternatively, in buildings with central ventilation systems, simply opening windows increases the air exchange, provided the outside temperatures allow it. However, this doesn’t work in practice or in terms of space: in modern buildings with dense cladding, central heating and ventilation systems, windows simply cannot be opened. This means that without active air humidification, the limit values of a relative room humidity of between 40 and 60 % are difficult to meet.
