A new study by America’s Yale University proves a connection between low humidity and the spread of influenza viruses. The study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health substantiates a cause-effect relationship between humidity and the infectivity of coughed-up viruses – and everything seems to suggest that the same applies to the coronavirus as well.
In their study, the US scientists from Yale University examined evidence of a possible significant correlation between influenza illnesses and low humidity in the months between December and April. The researchers recently succeeded in proving this to be the case in a long-running study entitled “Low ambient humidity impairs barrier function and innate resistance against influenza infection“: They could unambiguously prove that
- there is a connection between low humidity and the viability and spread of influenza viruses.
- too low humidity reduces the self-cleaning mechanism of the respiratory tract thus reducing the resistance of the immune system to viruses.
- the level of the illness at a low relative humidity regardless of the viral load becomes aggravated, and too low humidity inhibits the cell tissue’s capacity to repair itself.
The study’s conclusion: Although low humidity is not the only factor that can cause the spread of influenza and other viruses, a relative humidity between 40 and 60% minimises the risk of viral infection and hampers its ability to spread.
